Claude just hit number one in the App Store, and a wave of users are switching. The only catch: starting over. If ChatGPT has months or years of context about you, it feels painful to leave it behind. Good news: you do not have to.
In this video, I show how to use Claude’s built-in import memory flow to bring your ChatGPT context into Claude in minutes.
Step 1: Prepare Claude
Open Claude, tap your name, go to Settings, then Capabilities. Under Memory, choose “Import memory from another AI provider” and tap “Start Import.” Claude will display a prompt. Copy it. (For the official steps and supported platforms, see Anthropic’s support doc here: https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12123587-import-and-export-your-memory-from-claude)
Step 2: Get your summary from ChatGPT
Switch to ChatGPT, start a new chat, paste the prompt, and (if available) enable thinking mode to let it gather as much detail as possible. Send. ChatGPT will produce a summary of what it knows about you. This isn’t a one-to-one import of every chat, but it creates a baseline so you aren’t starting from scratch.
Step 3: Paste into Claude and clean it up
Use the copy button at the top of that response to grab just the plain text. Return to Claude, paste the summary, review it, remove anything you don’t want, and add anything ChatGPT missed. Click “Add to memory.” After a minute or two, review what Claude generated. Use the pencil icon to edit or ask Claude to remove or adjust items. You can also click “See what Claude learned about you” to verify.
Final settings
Back in Settings, confirm “Generate memory from chat history” is on. If you’re on a paid plan, enable “Search and reference chats” so Claude can reference conversations.
Privacy tip
Only import useful non-sensitive information. Avoid pasting passwords, personal identifiers, or private client data. If you have sensitive topics, keep them out or use incognito chats. More resources: https://blueboxdigital.com
FAQs
Can Claude import my entire ChatGPT chat history? No. Claude uses an import flow that creates a memory summary.
Is this available on free plans? Yes. Anthropic says memory imports are available on free, Pro, and Max plans (web/desktop), though features change over time.
